Acid reflux is a big problem. Many, many Americans suffer from heartburn at least once a month and don’t know why. When patients come to me asking what causes acid reflux, I always explain there can be many culprits. What solves the issue for one person won’t solve it for another. That’s why a Nutrition Response Testing assessment is so important.

The key to solving your acid reflux isn’t taking a prescription or over-the-counter acid blocker. They will relieve your symptoms, but there are a lot of issues with that type of medication. You need some acid in your stomach in order to digest your food and absorb the nutrients it contains. Reducing acid with medication can lead to mineral and gut deficiencies. It can also lead to an overgrowth of bad gut bacteria. Instead of popping a pill to help with your symptoms, the first step is to determine what causes acid reflux.

Food
Fried foods, spicy foods, citrus foods, tomato-based foods, processed foods, alcohol, and caffeine are all triggers for acid reflux. An elimination diet may be able to cut the list down for you. Or, there may be another food sensitivity that a general physician didn’t diagnose.

The time at which you eat
Eating right before bedtime or on a full stomach can cause acid reflux. These scenarios can cause the food to come back up. Chew slowly and enjoy your food. This will give your stomach and brain time to catch up with one another and prevent overeating.

Chronic stress
Ongoing stress affects the nerves in your stomach. That can make it very difficult for food to process properly. As a result, it will cause food to go up instead of down. Relax, and take a few deep breaths before each meal.

Bad gut bacteria or yeast
Lots of antibiotics, sugar, and processed foods promote bad gut bacteria. They can ferment and push things around, causing reflux.

So, there is no single answer to the question “what causes acid reflux?” It can be anything from the food you eat to your overall lifestyle, stress, and so much more.
