4 Natural Remedies for Osteoporosis

Donna Sergi • Jul 26, 2019

Even when we suffer from bone loss, there are a number of important steps we can take to prevent the disease from progressing. Unsurprisingly, eating well and staying active are two of the most effective ways to reduce the symptoms of osteoporosis, but there are a few other natural ways we can improve our bone health.

Healthy Diet

Two key nutrients in taking care of our bones are calcium (which builds our bones back up as they deteriorate) and Vitamin D (which helps absorb that calcium). Other bone-healthy vitamins and minerals include magnesium, phosphorus, manganese and vitamin K. About half of our bones’ structure is made from protein, so you should also be sure to consume a protein-rich diet as well.

Exercise

With bone loss, it might seem like exercising only increases the risk of injury. However, certain forms of exercise are beneficial, as they can help build bone density, improve flexibility and balance to avoid falls, reduce inflammation and relieve stress. Here are a few exercises recommended for people with osteoporosis:

  • Brisk walking
  • Elliptical training
  • Swimming
  • Bodyweight bearing exercises - push-ups, sit-ups, etc.
  • Yoga
  • Tai chi
  • Pilates

Preventing Falls

Even the slightest of falls can have a big impact on someone with osteoporosis. Here are some recommendations for avoiding fractures both at home and out-and-about:

  • Use a walker or cane if necessary
  • Stand up slowly when seated or lying down
  • Avoid walking on slippery surfaces
  • Wear comfortable, durable shoes
  • Ensure that your home is well lit and that walkways are unobstructed
  • Use handrails and install grab bars in your shower

Supplements

If you find that you aren’t getting enough of the nutrients mentioned above from your diet alone, it may be beneficial to take them in the form of a supplement. I find that Standard Process brand supplements are the highest quality and the most effective in improving your health naturally.
