Natural remedies for everyday symptoms

Unfortunately viruses, bacteria, and other ailments don’t discriminate. People of all ages are sadly being diagnosed with COVID-19. And pretty much everyone out there has experienced things like the cold or flu, digestive issues, insomnia, anxiety, and so much more. While symptoms are your body’s way of telling you something is wrong with it (and I therefore suggest addressing that closely), there are some natural remedies that can help in the short term. These are some of my favorites.

Natural remedies for digestive issues

If you’ve had heartburn, stomach pain, or constipation repeatedly, digestive issues are likely the culprit.

  • Probiotics - probiotics help balance the good bacteria in your gut to keep you healthy. So consuming probiotic foods like kimchi or raw sauerkraut, or taking a high-quality probiotic supplement on a daily basis is extremely beneficial. Probiotics are also helpful when you’re on antibiotics. Antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your system, which can have negative side effects. A common one is diarrhea.
  • Ginger - ginger is great for an upset stomach, nausea (including morning sickness), and motion sickness. Raw slices are best, so if you’re prone to stomach issues, I recommend keeping some fresh ginger root in the house at all times.

Natural remedies for a cough and sore throat

I know how uncomfortable a cough and sore throat can be (and how scary either are in today’s times.) The good news is that there are so many great natural remedies to try.

  • Manuka honey - manuka honey is a type of honey that comes from New Zealand. It’s pricey, but well worth it. Manuka honey boasts antiviral and antibacterial properties that can reduce inflammation and attack bad bacteria. It also coats the throat’s lining for a soothing effect and can suppress a cough.
  • Echinacea - echinacea is a group of flowering plants. It can reduce the duration of cold symptoms, especially when taken on the onset of feeling unwell. It’s commonly found in drops or pill form.
  • Elderberry syrup - elderberry syrup has antiviral properties, making it helpful for colds or the flu. Try taking it daily as a preventative, or up the dosage to multiple times per day if you’re not feeling good. There are plenty of store-bought options, but homemade is best. ( This recipe is easy.)

Natural remedies for sleep

In the best of times, I know many people don’t sleep well. So I realize the stresses of this pandemic can only make it worse. But hopefully these make it better.

  • Lavender - lavender essential oils are often used for calming and relaxation, and are safe for kids and adults alike. I suggest getting a diffuser, filling it with water, and adding a few drops of lavender oil. Then let it run through the night near your bed. You can also try diluting the oil and placing a drop on your temples, feet, or both.
  • Tea - a good cup of decaffeinated tea combined with a minute or two of deep breathing is a great way to unwind for the evening. I recommend chamomile, but it’s completely up to you.
