How To Stick To Your New Year’s Resolutions

Donna Sergi • Jan 24, 2019

Ever wonder why your New Year’s resolution doesn’t go according to plan? New year, new you….January is an exciting time for new beginnings, especially when it comes to personal health and wellness. But then come February, the allure fades and it’s back to reality. It happens to many of us. But that doesn’t have to include you!

Changing familiar habits is hard. It takes consistency and practice for permanent changes to happen. Although many people are unsuccessful in their New Year’s resolutions, you can take action steps to avoid being part of that statistic. Here’s how to get a head start on reaching your health and wellness goals.

Celebrate ALL Successes!

Did you avoid the aisles of processed food at the supermarket this week? Great work! Celebrate that. Try a new vegetable yesterday? Get an extra serving in over the course of the day? Recognize those wins too. It’s normal to focus on the things that didn’t go right, but what will keep you going long term is celebrating your successes. And remember that mistakes happen, so be kind to yourself.

Establish Mini Goals

The path can seem unclear when you’ve got one large goal like ‘lose 40 pounds.’ Instead, pick smaller goals that connect to the big one. For example, drink 8-10 glasses of water or exercise 2-3 times per week. Establishing mini goals also helps make your big goal seem less overwhelming.

Figure Out Your ‘WHY’

You’re much more likely to lose motivation if you don’t know WHY you’re doing what you’re doing. And make sure to document why the goals you set are important to you. For example, if your goal is to exercise more, is it to get stronger? To keep up with your kids? Something else? Make sure to constantly remind yourself. That will help if the day comes that you hit a roadblock and start to feel down on yourself.

Turning resolution to reality is very possible. I know you can do it!
