It’s All About Women’s Health and Wellness This Month

Donna Sergi • Jan 20, 2018

Sometimes I feel like us women are almost programmed to put ourselves last, despite the best of intentions. We’re so busy taking care of our loved ones that we just naturally forget to take care of ourselves. Sound familiar? I bet it does. But here’s the thing: you need to take care of yourself in order to take care of everyone else around you. Start by incorporating some - if not all - of these tips into your lifestyle.

Eat Whole Foods

Women’s nutrition can sometimes be a tricky thing, especially when mood swings and cravings are in full force. But when you focus on the right foods, you’ll experience a terrific energy boost and a myriad of other health benefits that are connected to all parts of your body, like your brain, heart, and digestive system, just to name just a few. And by whole foods, I mean things like healthy fats, lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. High-quality, whole food supplements can also help.

Schedule Some ‘Me’ Time Into Your Day

You’re not too busy to give yourself 10 minutes of ‘me’ time each day. Begin by simply shutting the door. Seriously. Being alone with your thoughts for a little while is great for your mental well-being. Try soaking in the tub, meditating, going for a walk or run around the block...it can be anything, as long as it’s all about YOU. (And if you can dedicate more than 10 minutes a day to this, even better.)

Start a Journal

Putting your thoughts on paper is a very liberating experience. Plus writing what’s stressing you out can help clear your mind, even if you toss those thoughts in the trash afterwards. Or if you do decide to keep your journal in tact, you’ll probably enjoy reading this year’s thoughts a few years later.

Modify Your Environment

Eliminate as many toxins and chemicals as possible from your environment. Believe it or not, they disrupt hormonal balance (and most people are exposed to hundreds a day) so there’s some actual truth to the whole “my hormones are out of whack” expression. The best way to start is by transitioning to naturally-sourced, organic cleaning supplies, personal care products, and even cosmetics. They’re more expensive for a reason, but it’s well worth it. I promise.

Lick The Sugar Habit

It’s not just you. Sugar is an addictive substance, and it’s hiding even in places you’d least expect it, like bread (I cover this topic in some of my workshops.) And it causes wacky highs and lows that leave you feeling lethargic. But that’s just the short-term effects of it. Looking at the big picture, sugar is toxic to your liver and can lead to things like type 2 diabetes, tooth decay, joint damage, and more.
