Common Causes of Lower Back Pain
Quite understandably, many of my patients’ first order of business is to completely discern the cause of their lower back issue. Some patients know exactly what caused their issue, while others may not even know where to begin guessing. This is quite normal. You may know of a specific, damage-inducing event, or you may have inexplicably awoken in pain one day. This is the nature of the lower back.
It is also important that a proper diagnosis be made at the very beginning. This assures the fact that your individualized, lower back pain treatments are the most efficient and safe manner of approach possible. So, in essence, if you do not know the cause of the issue, I will discover it and provide you with the help you need. What are some of the most common causes of lower back pain and discomfort?
Principally, there are three main problem-starters, with at least one being involved with each case. These are tissue and joint overuse and injury, pressure on spinal nerve roots, and compression fractures. Tissue and joint overuse and injury is a fairly common cause for the seeking out of lower back pain treatment.
Your lower back is complex mechanism, featuring an array of soft tissue which includes, muscle, ligament, cartilage, nerve, and disc. There are infinite ways to injure or overuse any number of these components. When you do, you will begin to notice problems.
Nerve pressure is another chief motivator for those seeking lower back pain treatment. In and around your spine is a complex network of nerves. These nerves, often likened to wires in a computer, can be subjected to pinching, kinking, and other physical pressures. Leading causes of pressure on nerves and the subsequent pain include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, and small fractures of the disc.
The third and final main cause of lower back pain is compression fracture. In a compression fracture, a small break occurs, usually due to previous degradation of the spine due to another condition. Osteoporosis is one such cause for the circumstances to be right for compression fracture.
Certainly, there are other causes, aside from these three main causes, for people to seek relief from lower back pain. These factors are typically less common amongst the general population, however, they can merit as much if not more attention than any of the more common problem-causers listed above. These less common issues can include bacterial infection, surgery complications and after-treatment, Ankylosing Spondylitis – a form of arthritis, and even spinal tumors or other physical irregularities of the lower back structure.
