Finding Your Natural Remedy for GERD and Acid Reflux

Finding Your Natural Remedy for GERD and Acid Reflux
To understand the possible cause of your problem, you have to understand how healthy digestion is designed to work. Digestion begins when food enters our mouth. It is chewed into a ball, travels down our esophagus and then passes through a circular muscular area that acts like a door.

This is called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Once the food passes through this door it is now in the stomach. This door opens to allow food into the stomach and closes to prevent food from backing up into the esophagus.

The food then enters the stomach which must have an acidic pH of 1.0 - 2.0 in order to be properly digested.  An example of pH of 1.0 is battery acid. Yes! Your stomach is likening to battery acid. This is quite normal and healthy. It generally takes 2 hours for the food to digest in the stomach. The partially digested food then passes through another door at the end of the stomach, the pyloric sphincter.  This door allows food to enter the area of the small intestines called the duodenum.
The acidic environment of the stomach is vital and allows:
  • Triggering the closing of the lower esophageal sphincter so acidic food meaning properly digested food can enter the stomach.
  • Triggering the opening of the pyloric sphincter so acidic food can enter the duodenum for the next phase of digestion.
  • Begins protein breakdown
  • Kills food borne pathogens viruses, bacteria, parasites
  • Hostile environment for yeast and bacterial overgrowth
  • Metabolism of vitamins B12, C
  • Metabolism of minerals, iron, calcium, magnesium
  • Helps support the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, fats, vitamin A, E by stimulating the release of enzymes from the pancreas and bile into the small intestines for the next stage of digestion
Yes, your digestive system can be fully restored with natural acid reflux remedies and remedies for GERD. Now that you understand how your body is supposed to work, let's explore the most common and likely causes of your health concern.

Holistic Treatment for Acid Reflux and GERD using Natural Remedies

A natural remedy program that gets to the root of your heartburn, acid reflux or GERD can last a lifetime with absolutely no side effects.  The only side effect is increased health and well-being. Heart burn is when a person experiences a burning sensation behind the breastbone that at times travels up to the throat. GERD, gastro esophageal reflux disease, is diagnosed when heart burn or acid reflux occurs at least twice a week, interferes with your daily life or damage can be seen to your esophagus. Barrett's esophagus is when the esophagus has been exposed to stomach acid for so long that the cells change their structure.  If left untreated .05 percentage of individuals with Barrett's esophagus are susceptible to esophageal cancer.
  • Not chewing your food properly or too quickly. Digestion begins in the mouth.  Food must be thoroughly chewed as it mixes with saliva to begin its breakdown.  Stomach acid will be suppressed when we are stressed and hurrying through your meal.
  • Consuming food depleted of enzyme and nutrients. We are meant to consume foods that are full of enzymes and nutrients.  These enzymes and nutrients help use pre-digest our food prior to entering the stomach.  Most of us consume pre-cooked, pre-packaged and processed foods which have little to no enzymes.  This consequently places a heavy burden on your digestive system beginning at the stomach and ending with the large intestine.  These foods are convenient but we pay a heavy price for this convenience with our health.
  • Hiatal Hernia:  This is when the esophagus pushes upward into the lower part of the stomach.
  • Medications such as Anxiety medications, Antibiotics, Antidepressants, High blood pressure medications, Nitroglycerin, Osteoporosis Medications, and NSAIDS.
  • Low Stomach Acid: In my professional opinion the number one reason for heartburn and GERD is low production of stomach acid.  Low stomach acid production is quite prevalent and is more common as we age.  40% of individuals by the age of 40 have low stomach acid. By 60 years of age the number climbs to 50%.  At age 80, 90% have low stomach acid.
This may be the total opposite of what you have been told by your physician, read in the newspapers and reported in medical journals.  You may have been lead to believe that the cause of your heartburn or GERD is that you produce too much stomach acid.  This then leads to acid leaking into your throat which causes the burning sensation behind your chest or the sour taste in your mouth. This is not true. Yes! The stomach acid is leaking into your throat but this is just a SYMPTOM but the real CAUSE of your problem may be not having enough stomach acid.

Why Your Prescription and Over-the-Counter Medicines Aren't Working for You

Medication to lower stomach acid production stops the SYMPTOMS of heartburn and GERD but does NOT get to the real CAUSE of your problem. These medications and antacids are not meant to use long term as most people do.  These medications are to be used for no more than eight weeks then the patient should be re-evaluated.  The Food and Drug Administration advises that no more than three 14-day treatment courses should be used in one year. Taking these medications long term can lead to:
  • Undigested food, especially protein will enter the small and large intestines which can lead to leaky gut syndrome, food sensitivities, constipation, bloating, autoimmune diseases, decreased immune function, headache, depression, anxiety.
  • Inhibiting your ability to metabolize vitamin B12 and iron which can cause anemia
  • Malabsorption of magnesium
  • Inhibiting your ability to metabolize calcium which can lead to osteoporosis
  • Increasing your risk of fractures of the hip, wrist and spine
  • Becoming susceptible to bacteria growth in the stomach, most commonly H. Pylor
  • Becoming susceptible to communicable pneumonia
  • Becoming susceptible to food borne parasite, virus and bacteria
  • Increasing your risk of Clostridium Difficle infection associated with diarrhea
